What Is Conscious Discipline?

Video: Conscious Discipline Basics

Conscious Discipline is a research-based social-emotional learning and classroom management approach that helps children build the emotional, social, and problem-solving skills they need to be successful in school and in life. It is designed to create safe, connected, and engaging learning environments where children can thrive.
Conscious Discipline is based on the understanding that children learn best when they feel safe, supported, and emotionally connected to the adults around them. Instead of relying primarily on rewards and punishment, this approach teaches children valuable life skills that help them manage their emotions, solve conflicts, communicate respectfully, and make positive choices.
Through consistent routines, meaningful relationships, and intentional teaching, children learn how to:
  • Recognize and manage their emotions
  • Develop self-control and self-regulation skills
  • Build healthy relationships with peers and adults
  • Communicate wants and needs appropriately
  • Solve problems peacefully
  • Show empathy, kindness, and respect
  • Cooperate and work with others
  • Take responsibility for their actions
  • Develop confidence and independence
Conscious Discipline is built around seven core skills and seven powers for conscious adults. These include composure, encouragement, assertiveness, empathy, positive intent, choices, and consequences. Together, these skills help children learn how to respond to challenges in healthy and productive ways.
In all our Classrooms, Conscious Discipline include structures and routines such as:
  • Greeting rituals to help children feel welcomed and connected
  • Safe Places where children can calm down and practice self-regulation
  • Visual schedules and routines that provide consistency and predictability
  • Brain Smart Start activities that prepare children for learning through connection, movement, breathing, and commitment
  • Problem-solving strategies that help children work through conflicts respectfully
  • Family Boards and classroom jobs that help children feel included and valued
Conscious Discipline also supports teachers and families by providing practical strategies to respond to challenging behaviors in calm, respectful, and effective ways. Adults learn how to model emotional regulation, build strong relationships, and create environments where children feel seen, heard, safe, and important.
At the heart of Conscious Discipline is the belief that every interaction is an opportunity to teach. By helping children feel connected and supported, we create a strong foundation for academic success, emotional well-being, and lifelong learning.
Our program is committed to using Conscious Discipline practices to create a positive school culture where children, families, and staff work together to build safe, caring, and successful learning environments.
